| October 2009 Newsletter Stough to Speak at International Conference in Spain Dr. Laura Stough, Interdisciplinary Training Coordinator for the Center, has been invited to speak at the Global Conference on Inclusive Education in Salamanca, Spain, Oct. 21–23. She will present on “Inclusive Education and Students with Significant Disabilities in the U.S.” Conference organizers say that a report on inclusive education will be released that "identifies the sources of discrimination faced by children with intellectual disabilities in education and makes recommendations to governments and policy makers about how to address these issues." The conference is co-sponsored by The United Nations, among others. New Support Group for Adults with Disabilities Looking for a place to connect with others in the community and talk about the things that impact your life? Kicking off a series on Tuesday, Oct. 20, the Adults with Disabilities Support Group will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the College Station Conference Center. Subsequent meetings will be held on Oct. 27, Nov. 17, Dec. 1 and Dec. 15. Light snacks will be served. Bring your own beverage. For more information, download the flyer (PDF). Castillo Elected to APA Fellow Status Congratulations to Dr. Linda Castillo, Affiliated Professor with the Center! The American Psychological Association has elected Dr. Castillo to fellow status effective last month. Fellow status is an honor bestowed upon APA members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology. It requires that a person's work has had a demonstrated national impact on the field. Community Award to be Given at J505 Fundraiser Laura Harding, daughter of one of the Center's CAC members, Tammy Tiner, will receive the 2009 Bryan-College Station Mayors’ Award at the Junction Five-O-Five Harvest Moon Fundraiser to be held on Thursday, Oct. 15 from 6 to 10 pm at the Hilton Hotel. This award recognizes outstanding contributions by individuals in Bryan-College Station to eliminate attitudinal, social, and physical barriers for people with disabilities. Laura is being recognized as a self-advocate who has increased awareness of people with disabilities as valuable, contributing members of the community.
