“I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day!” - E.B. White

Hello friends. Is this weather beautiful or what!? Any day in November above 60 degrees gets a big gold star next to it on my calendar. I hope you are enjoying it. The leaves have almost all fluttered away, the trees now almost bare. We head to that time of year when much of nature goes into hibernation, less hours of sunshine, the winds change from Gulf of Mexico breezes to Alberta clippers. I was driving past the Cincinnati Zoo one day last week and saw a group of people planting what looked to be tulip bulbs, hundreds of them, in a garden in the front of the Zoo entrance. It was a comforting reminder that spring will return, with all its’ splendor, soon enough. I will have to go back there in the spring. _______________________________________________________________________

Speaking of the Cincinnati Zoo, we send out a big thank you to Linda Stetson, Director of Planned Giving and Major Gifts at the Zoo, and her husband David. They hosted a party at their home on Halloween afternoon for family and friends, raising money to benefit Our Daily Bread. Keeping with the ‘spirit’ of the day, Val Nastrom from the Zoo visited the party along with some zoo animal friends: a barn owl named Casper, a python snake, an armadillo, and a scorpion (IT WAS CRAWLING ON HIS BARE HAND, YIKES!). Thank you to Linda and David, and their family and friends, for the generous gift to Our Daily Bread. (and thank you Val for freaking us out on Halloween!)

Any guest of Our Daily Bread who is celebrating a birthday during the current month is welcomed to a birthday bag and birthday cake. We have many volunteers who make the birthday cakes for us each month for whom we are so grateful. Some of our “birthday angels” pray over the cakes as a way to pray for the guest that will receive it. I was recently told a story about the four year old daughter of one of our bakers. She sings the Happy Birthday song to the cake after it is baked so that when a guest opens the box with the cake in it, the cake will sing Happy Birthday to them. If you happen to be at Our Daily Bread when one of our guests opens their birthday cake box, listen very closely. You may well hear a beautiful little voice singing - “Happy Birthday to you….”

Volunteers who work in our kitchen have all kinds of experiences while interacting with our guests. Part of a volunteer story recently shared with us: “I’m at the first station serving. The clients’ picture of what they get begins at that point, that first dish. When they give me grief or complain about stuff, I have to remind myself they have so little control over anything in their life, I mean…nothing, so give them the space. What’s very impressive is Kathy’s (kitchen manager) ability to maintain her cool. I’m Irish Catholic; we don’t hold our cool, we fire back. There’s one particular guy that when I first stared coming here, was arrogant, pushy, bossy, and it was hard for me to hold back saying something. But over time, we have a little rapport going on. I passed the test. I’m just here to put a smile on his face.”
