“Let your heart feel for the afflictions and distress of everyone.” - George Washington
Hello friends. HAPPY - St.Valentine’s Day, Presidents Day, Black History Month, Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras and…whew!! I think that’s everything. I hope life is good and you get to celebrate some (or all!) of those holidays.

There are so many people and companies who donate goods and services to Our Daily Bread. Quite literally, we could not do it without them. Special shout outs this month to JTM, Club Chef, Smuckers, BonBonerie, Premier Sales Solutions, Kristen at Calvary Christian School and Jason at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. There aren’t enough thank you’s for what you do for us.

She is our guest. She is homeless, suffers from mental illness, a frequent visitor to Our Daily Bread. We called her “Frayed Pants”. We couldn’t get her real name. The pants that she wears are too long so the pant legs are terribly tattered at the bottom from being walked on. Frayed Pants is a person that is avoided on the street. Her clothes are ragged, her hands and face covered with layers of dirt. She talks or yells to herself or to the voices inside her head. She is our guest. Volunteers and staff, particularly Kathy Ray, our kitchen manager, say hello to her with no presumption that she might return the greeting. But one day, Frayed Pants walked into Kathy’s office. She saw a bag of bite size Reese Cups on Kathy’s desk and asked her for some. As she sat down in the chair across from Kathy’s desk and began to open one of the candies, she told Kathy she wanted to talk. “Maybe not right not now,” she said to Kathy. “It might take me a while.” She is our guest. Over time Frayed Pants told Kathy her name. With that information, Joyce Cue, our social worker, was able to get in touch with a case manager. Things are in motion now to get Frayed Pants off the street, into an apartment, get her help with her mental illness. To paraphrase a volunteers’ insight, “our guests enter everyday so unclearly. But I smile at them, say hello, and recognize the God spark in them.” Frayed Pants has the God spark in her. She is our guest…and now we know her name.
