“Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels.”
-Hebrews, Chapter 13

Hello everyone. Can you believe it is the 27th of October already? Wow. Hope you are enjoying the fall colors of the trees, and the sky….it is a beautiful shade of blue this time of year.

Many times, even most times, our guests offer so much in return when someone reaches out to help them. Following are a couple of notes written to Kathy Ray, our Kitchen Manager, from high school students who recently volunteered at Our Daily Bread:

“Dear Kathy, Thank you for allowing us to come in and help pass out food. I learned a lot from working in the kitchen. I intended to be bored but I had fun. I interacted with a lot of the homeless, which ended up changing my perceptions of the homeless. I even started forming some relationships. I liked it. Thank you for the opportunity.” – Jamila, Clark Montessori.

“Dear Kathy, I can’t tell you in words how much your service helped open my eyes to a not-so-perfect world that people have become all but oblivious to. It brought me joy every time someone would say ‘thank you’ or even just smile and I actually felt I made a direct impact on the people’s lives, even if it was just for a few moments. I genuinely feel more people should experience [Our Daily Bread] and I thank you for letting me participate.” - Ben, Bishop Brossart High School.

Though it was chilly and rainy outside the evening of Friday, October 16th, The Jimmy Church Band helped warm things up inside the Soul of the City Soiree tent, set up next the Montgomery Inn Boathouse. Everyone had a great time at the annual fundraiser benefiting Our Daily Bread. Thanks so much to all those who attended the event. Thanks to our sponsors: Macy’s, JTM, Home City Ice, Blue Sky Creative Inc., Ethicon Endo Surgery, MSA Architects, Relay Gear, Coca Cola, Kroger, and Montgomery Inn. Thanks to the many individuals and company’s who donated to the event. Thanks to the 2009 Soiree Committee which includes Fred Wahl, Duane Hickerson, Craig Combest, Dean Gregory, Bill Hughes, Ruthie Keefe, Steve Eha, Mark Broderick, Ebo Hayes, Tony Dellecave, Wendy Furbay, Trevor Furbay and Mike O’Brien. Thanks also to the staff of the Montgomery Inn Boathouse for the great food and hospitality.

One final note on the 2009 Soiree: a surreal moment for me happened during the evening when a Motown band….from Nashville, Tennessee….cranked out a “Journey” song. Whoa!! “JUST A CITY BOY, BORN AND RAISED IN SOUTH DETROIT, HE TOOK THE MIDNIGHT TRAIN GOING ANYWHERE.” Many of us ‘of a certain age’ were singing along. Great tune!

Something to think about: “Everywhere I go – from villages outside Kandy, Sri Lanka, to community centers in Amman, Jordan, to offices at the State Department in Washington D.C. – I find people with a similar story. When thousands of people discover that their story is also someone else’s story, they have a chance to write a new story together.” - Eboo Patel

God’s peace,
Paul
