What do the troubled elections in Afghanistan and the continuing violence in Iraq teach us about the West’s attempt to export democracy around the world?
BBC foreign correspondent Humphrey Hawksley, author of Democracy Kills: What's So Good About Having The Vote, will be discussing the West’s "democratic mission" and f there can be a transition from dictatorship to democracy without bloodshed.
With: Rachel Reid, Afghanistan researcher at Human Rights Watch; Najibullah Razaq, journalist and expert on Afghanistan; Nick Fielding, former Sunday Times journalist and editor of Circling the Lion’s Den, a blog on Afghanistan


1989: The fall of the Berlin Wall

To mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, journalists who witnessed the events of 9 November 1989 will be at the Frontline Club to discuss their experiences and the impact of that night on world history. With:
Nick Thorpe, BBC correspondent and author of ‘89: The Unfinished Revolution: Power and Powerlessness in Eastern Europe: Ann Leslie, of the Daily Mail who for much of her career has been the paper's foreign corresponent; Bill Neely, International Editor for ITV News;
Peter Millar, author of 1989 The Berlin Wall: My Part in Its Downfall.
Glen Oglaza, Sky News political correspondent will be moderating this event



London Premiere Screening: RIP - A Remix Manifesto

Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film's central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil's Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.

 



Avi Shlaim in conversation with Shlomo Sand

Avi Shlaim, professor of international relations at Oxford will be in conversation with Shlomo Sand, professor of contemporary history at Tel Aviv University, at the Frontline Club for a seminal evening of discussion.
Avi Shlaim's new book, Israel and Palestine focuses on the causes and consequences of the Israeli-Palestine conflict, while Shlomo Sand's international best-seller The Invention of the Jewish People unravels the mythologised history of the Jewish people.

John Sheppard Tribute Screening: The six day war - Day 666

This
celebrated episode of World in Action demonstrates how John Sheppard’s work redefined investigative journalism and current affairs.
Shot some eighteen months after the Israeli's crushing victory in the Six-Day War and subsequent occupation of the West Bank, the film includes unique footage of an attack on an Israeli observation post, taken when John Sheppard crossed the Jordan with an al-Fatah unit.

Followed by a Q&A with Director Marc Isaacs.
For two years filmmaker Marc Isaacs followed the lives of four men working in the City of London - a hedge fund manager, a debt collector, a road sweeper and a man with a sandwich board. He began filming before the financial crash and was able to record its impact on the lives of all four of the men as the drama unfolded. Marc Isaac's film focuses on the motivation of people who work in the City.

Followed by a Q&A with Director Denise Zmekhol and Elenira Mendes (Chico Mendes daughter) and now founder of the Chico Mendes Institute.
A journey with Brazilian filmmaker Denise Zmekhol to the heart of the Amazon rainforest in search of the indigenous children she photographed fifteen years ago.
Part road movie, part time travel, Children of the Amazon include
s interviews with the now-grown children, telling the story of what happened to life in the largest forest on Earth when a road was built straight through it.

The Frontline Club is proud to announce the screening one of the shortlisted short documentaries for the 2010 Academy Awards. A vivid and astonishingly candid look at the catastrophic impact of the earthquake in central China on 12 May, 2008. China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province follows parents whose children were among the 5,300 who died or remain missing. This 40-minute verité documentary shares in the grief of the parents, many of whom lost their only child.

What have been the consequences of this move of the super-rich to the capital and of Britain's remarkable compliance in the transfer of wealth from Russia?

Award winning Allan Little has covered many of the major events and upheavals of the past two decades during his career at the BBC.

In the second of this inspiring new series he will be talking about the journalism that inspired him, his work in South Africa and Russia as well as covering conflicts in Yugoslavia and Iraq with Vin Ray, director of the BBC College of Journalism.
