For Job Seeking MBAs, Alumni May Be the Answer With fewer jobs available through on-campus recruiting and job boards, alumni networks are becoming more critical

For Alex Cavallini, the financial crisis hit home as he was preparing to begin a job with Cummins Inc. (CMI). Less than 24 hours before he was set to fly out to his new office, the diesel engine manufacturer rescinded his offer, leaving the recent graduate jobless—even though just a few months before he had his pick of offers from two companies. "I felt like I was losing two jobs at once," he says. So Cavallini turned to his school, which turned to Brian Hancock, a vice-president at Whirlpool whom Cavallini had worked for and impressed during his internship thesummer before. As important as that good impression, Cavallini says, was that Hancock was a fellow alumnus of Brigham Young University. The alum sympathized with Cavallini's plight, and placed a call that afternoon to the CEO of a Whirlpool supplier. Company executives interviewed Cavallini within days and then offered him a job. He accepted, and in less than a week the 28-year-old went from being unemployed to being upwardly mobile.
CMBA Student Spotlight As most of us already know, the students of the CBU CMBA program come from many different industries. Some come, naturally, from business backgrounds, others come from more varied schools of thought. But one thing for certain, we are all united under the umbrella of the CMBA program. Each of us share passions for knowledge, leadership, and making a name for ourselves (not to mention making a few extra bucks). This section is dedicated to those special students (one from each cohort) that stand out amongst the others. They have been selected by their classmates because of their leadership, intelligence, character, and/or personality. Remember their names and faces because it may be them getting that huge signing bonus post-graduation. (And they will be taking us all out for drinks afterward to celebrate! Right??)
CMBA Professor Spotlight What better way to prepare for you next class than by getting to know the professor? Highlighted below are the professors of the next round of MBA courses.* Each have their own talents, skills, and professional experiences to offer their students. Feel free drop them an email introduction before class or set up a time to meet them around campus. Let’s face it. It never hurts to schmooze the professor.

Dear MBA students: It has been a long time since I sat in the very chairs you are now sitting. Well, not really that long ago, only 6 or 7 years ago. However, much has changed in delivery of the MBA program, content, and style of program. All changes for the best, I might add, as I helped make many of the changes during my tenure as Director of Graduate Programs at CBU. Alas, that is for another letter! My purpose now is to attempt to offer some words of encouragement and enlightenment for your journey through the program. I hope I am able to help several of you.
CBU CMBA News MBA Students Connect in the Classroom & On-line
The Problem: CMBA students were missing out on one of the biggest resources of an MBA program (other MBA students!) and were limited to their classroom for student networking opportunities.
The Solution: A student-run website (www.bucMBA.com) that adds value to the MBA program by allowing all cohorts to connect with each other outside the classroom.
CBU Career Center The CBU Career Center offers services available to all students and alumni. Its main focus is to assist CBU students at every stage of their career development journey.
In this article we have detailed some of the main services provided by the Career center.
On July 10th, the CBU CMBA program hosted its first Cohort Mixer. This event drew a crowd of current MBA students, faculty, alumni, and prospective students. The event featured notable guest speakers including, CBU alum and News Channel Five anchor Joe Birch, our recent Interim President, Lance Forsdick, and Brother Terrence McLaughlin. Each had some wonderful words to share with everyone about CBU and the University's core values.
A Little Bit of Fun... In addition to having regular, University-sponsored events, some students of the MBA program have decided to collaborate in organizing a number of outside, student-run social events.
An events committee is being formed and we are looking for additional MBA students who would like to participate in helping coordinate regular events. (An MBA Prom has been tabled as our first event!)
Email bucMBA@gmail.com if you would like to participate in the MBA Student Events Committee.
