Happiness is living without expectations
We never feel this Petri Kajander quote to be more true than in January. Now, we set aside thoughts of sun-drenched days of spring when bees waft around the apple blossoms and, instead, let ourselves notice and absorb what goodness January brings… lavender and apricot sunsets etched against a background of white and grey, potted narcissus flowering on the windowsill, days when the mercury rises above freezing and the winter sun warms our faces. The market has a different personality in winter, too. We are all especially glad to be together, off our farms and out of our studios, vendors trade conversation and barter with one another.

In summer, market entertainment might look like a band of a dozen playing vibrant Ugandan music. Last Sunday, our entertainment was one 12 year old boy, Avery, playing his fiddle. And play he did, for nearly three hours straight. Avery preferred not to take breaks lest someone arrive and not be greeted with his jaunty, sweet music. When he concluded his playing for the day, the entire room applauded in unison. Avery’s fiddle case was filled with coins and bills, a wedge of cheese, a box of truffles, and a bag of Chocolate Chip cookies and Avery smiled broadly. There’s January for you. The slow and steady advance toward springtime is underway… Fabyan Sugar Shack will begin tapping the maples this weekend!

Start with the farmer in planning winter menus:
In the heady abundance of summer days, one can leaf through a cookbook to select a recipe and head to the farmers’ market to buy ingredients. In August, there will be sweet corn, zucchini, peppers and the like. But in winter one must, as Petri Kajander suggests, live without such expectations. The best way to shop for fresh local foods at this time of year is to start with the farmer… come to the market and see what the farmers have to offer this week. Beginning with the key ingredients, one can plan a fabulous menu of real foods that will nourish your body and soul.

This Sunday, it might work like this:

Buy Pork chops and butternut squash from Highland Thistle Farm;
Dried beans from 18th Century Purity Farm; and
Maple syrup from Fabyan Sugar Shack, then make:

Buy Collard greens from Wayne’s Organic Garden; and
Beef sausage from New Boston Beef, then make:

Buy Free-range chicken from Highland Thistle Farm; and
Yogurt from Ladies of Levita Road, then make:
Chicken in Yogurt Sauce (Murgh Khorma)

This week the spotlight’s on Haider Farm:
Nestled on the top of a hill in Franklin you will find Haider Farm, with over 30 acres of pastures, gardens and hay fields.  Haider Farm is owned by Ron Haider, and managed by Rhonda Withington. The farm offers Certified Organic vegetables at farmers’ markets and last season began a CSA. They also sell farm raised beef, which is grass fed and USDA processed, and fresh eggs. They report that the other night they had a sirloin steak, a bit of a treat as these are usually promised to customers, and they found it to be the best steak they’d had in years! Also offered are other products made on the farm, dill & garlic-infused organic vinegar made with their organic herbs, & blueberry vinegar. "Fido's Favorite Treats" are irresistible dog treats made from 100% natural pasture-raised liver, lightly seasoned. White Crane Creations at Haider Farm also offers Holistic, Natural, foot care products, salves, and tea blends. Haider Farm is our guest this week, please stop by to welcome them to Coventry.  They have a few openings for their 2010 CSA and they will bring brochures and applications with them.
