Chapoutier Domaine de Bila Haut Occultum Lapidem 2007 Upping the Ante in the Roussillon
Over the last several weeks, we have featured several Cotes du Roussillon selections, including the baby brother of this bombastic Southern French red. Occultum Lapidem is a mouthful of a name for a wine, but rest assured, what we have here folks is a MOUTH FULL of a wine to back it up. The fact of the matter is this... the Cotes du Roussillon-Villages appellation is putting out some of the very best value red wines to be found anywhere is in the world today. Occultum Lapidem from Domaine de Bila Haut is just the latest example of the remarkable quality to be discovered in these parts... and it is a wine that you want to add to your collection.
If I may borrow a quote from one of my favorite wine writers, who tasted this wine for Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate in Issue #183 "smells of violets, toasted walnuts, cassis, licorice, rosemary, roasted meats, and sea breeze. Fascinating suggestions of brine and iodine, resinous southern French herbs and exotic spices, inform the deeply fruited as well as richly carnal palate, where a caressing polish and tender, ultra-refined tannins make themselves subtly felt. The finish here is bright and refreshing even as it is profoundly rich. I imagine this incredible value and remarkable performance for its vintage will be well worth following for 5-7 years." With only 36 bottles remaining in stock, we anticipate that the wine will sell out right away.
