2006 Schild Estate Shiraz, Barossa Valley

What is a Bin End?  The best answer? An offer like the 2006 Schild Estate.

Schild Estate, a long time family owned property in Australia's Barossa Valley has produced world class wine for decades. Great press, great wines, the whole bit, the 2005 Shiraz was even #16 on Wine Spectators Top 100 in 2007. They were cruising along with the very tasty 2006 vintage until.... BOOM! Wine Spectator comes out and slaps the 2007 Shiraz at the top of the list in their recent "500 Great Buys" and hits it with a 92 point rating.

Wine Spectator is notorious for rating wines that are not yet in the supply chain forcing suppliers to either sit on goods or move 'em out to catch the momentum that a score beginning with a "9-" will produce. As is the case with Schild Estate, 2007 is not yet in the market and the distributor is now looking to move out the 2006 which just so happens to now be an even better value and is drinking quite beautifully.

And that is just one of thousands of ways a wine will make it's way to Bin Ends. Being stuck between "Top 100" and "500 Great Buys" vintages of 2005 and 2007 is not an easy place to be, but this is an outstanding wine! Bright fruit would be an understatement. The strawberry and fresh crushed raspberry is in the drivers seat from front to back. This is a big, muscular wine, but the clean bright fruit keeps it fresh and lively.
