Clos Figueras Font de la Figuera Priorat 2005
What separates a good wine from a great wine is the sense of place. You know from scent and taste alone when you taste a great Barolo, Burgundy or Bordeaux. The place (terroir) shines through, you can taste the earth, the vineyard, the sun and the region that brought us these wines. The Priorat region of Spain is one of the most distinct regions in all of Spain. A well made Priorat is unmistakable. The combination of extreme power, rich, dark fruit, earth and spice screams of the rugged hillside vineyards that create these wines. One of my most memorable vineyard visits is a ride in an open jeep straight up a treacherous mountainside trail into these vineyards. Old, mangled Garnarcha vines clung to the rocky hillside like some type of alien creature. "so this is why it tastes like this", it all made sense now. The fact that these vines survived at all was pretty amazing. The 2005 Font de la Figuera is made with old vine Garnacha and Carignan. The wine successfully combines all the power, and dark berry fruit and the scents and flavor of the earth that these vines cling to. This is a big powerhouse of a wine layered with complexity. The value is terrific as Priorat is traditionally not cheap. There is no way to produce wine in these conditions at this quality and do it on the cheap. Normal retail of $40 is right on the mark, today, we have it for a 33% savings at just $26.80. Grab some! 90 Points- The Wine Advocate |
