Plying the backroads of Kerala
Our new Cycling Kerala's Backroads tour is a loop through one of India's smallest states. Kerala is known for its tropical greenery, beaches, wildlife reserves, tea and spice plantations, as well as its temperate climate. Kerala's location near the equator combined with the sea breezes and cool temperatures of the highlands make it a perfect bicycling destination and lives up to its tagline – God’s Own Country. In 10 cycling days we'll ride 555 kilometres on paved country roads that gently take you up the slopes of the mountainous Western Ghats. In the highlands the weather will be cooler and you'll be riding amidst endless tea plantations, through cardamon estates as well as exploring three nature sanctuaries. We have one day free to explore Periyar National Park, home to many herds of elephants and up to 40 tigers. A highlight of the tour is spending an afternoon and night on the vast network of canals, known as the backwaters, on a converted rice barge. History is also part of the tour as you explore the colonial town of Kochi. These are just some of the many reasons that National Geographic Traveller Magazine named Kerala one of the "10 Paradises of the World" and "50 Places of a Lifetime." Cycling Kerala's Backroads 14 Day/13 Night tour is US$2,100 and departure dates for 2010 are October 17, November 14 and December 5. We also have three tours planned for 2011 -- January 30, February 13 and March 13. We are offering a US$275 discount on our first tour that departs on October 17! Book here to sign up!
Raise your expectations in Northern India
Our inaugural trip to India's Nubra Valley is guaranteed to depart on August 15. This 14-day tour of riding 520 kilometres in 8 cycling days through the high altitude mountain desert of Ladakh is a unique destination for cyclists, but it isn't for the fainthearted. We are offering a special introductory rate of US$1,675 for this adventure. In 2011 the tour will depart on June 26 at US$1,950. To receive a detailed itinerary, please drop us an e-mail. Excellent ratings on TripAdvisor Your guide knows how to do the Heimlich! As part of our annual training, guides, mechanics, drivers and office staff learned how to make a splint, perform CPR as well as spending a day going over emergency procedures on the road. One day of the training session was dedicated to making sure all guides and drivers know SpiceRoads procedures when out on a tour. We also received valuable feedback from our drivers who always ready with water, fruit and encouraging smile. The next day was dedicated to first aid and was conducted by the Thai Red Cross. Though we are glad they have the know how, we hope that our guides and drivers never have to use the first aid lessons they learned! Above mechanic Vee practices the Heimlich maneuver on guide Bottle.
