Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Competition

2009 Finalists

These 12 screenplays have been selected as the finalists for the 2009 Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Competition. From these, six winners will be chosen and invited to participate in the 2009 Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Retreat at the historic Margaret Mitchell House.

 

The Black Cat - Mark Penberthy

Las Vegas, NV

A passed over boxing promoter buys a nightclub for his headstrong wife with money that turns out to belong to his murderous ex-business partner.

 

Faking It - Jenna Milly

Decatur, GA

A romantic comedy about a perfect Southern housewife who, on the eve of her 10 year anniversary, confesses to her husband she's been faking orgasms for the past decade.

 

Flying Tigers - Vincent Ho

Atlanta, GA

The true story of the Flying Tigers, a rogue group of American pilots who fought to defend China from Japan during WWII.

 

Grilled Cheese Virgin - Steven Arvanites

New York, NY

When a streetwise hooker and a devout pre-op tranny fry a grilled cheese sandwich with the image of the Virgin Mary seared into the bread, one makes it a business opportunity while the other sees the relic as her salvation.

 

Gurus - Homa Mojtabai

Atlanta, GA

Priya and Samantha - desperate to maintain their posh lifestyles after being laid off - pretend that Priya is a famous Indian Yoga Guru to bilk wealthy Manhattanites.

 

Highway to Nowhere - Lanre Olabisi

New York, NY

Hector has a dream to re-unite his family after a two year absence.  He must trek through the scorching Arizona desert to do so.  Unfortunately for him, the desert is where dreams come to die.

 

Horror Comic - Stephen Hoover

In the 1950s the greatest threat to the United States is not global Communist expansion or nuclear annihilation.  It's comic books.

 

The Jerusalem Syndrome - Caveh Zahedi

A metaphysical thriller about a writer who starts having inexplicable visions which lead him to suspect that he may have been the apostle Judas in a past life. He begins a quest to discover his hidden identity.

 

My Husband, The Dick - Keith Davidson

Ottawa, ON

When a detective's wife starts writing a novel about his last case, the ensuing battle for creative control between the detective, his wife and her editor threatens to destroy the marriage.

 

Skin - Josephine Mackerras

Paris, France

Flynn, a young man determined to reject his trans-identity joins a racist street gang before an escape to the city provides him with the opportunity of self-discovery that finally allows him to accept his own skin.

 

Veiled - Robbi D'Allessandro

Hingham, MA

An adult victim of child abuse, Liv has two saving graces; the family she cherishes, and her ability to bury the past. When her brother commits suicide, subsequent events threaten the loss of all things cherished.

 

Wajda - Haifaa Al Mansour

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

A young girl innocently challenges the deep-rooted and traditional constraints of her conservative Saudi village through a desperate and hopeful attempt to attain a forbidden green bicycle.
