spreading holiday cheer!

Ivan in front of the Christmas treeThe Holiday season is upon us once again and it's time to think about parties, food, and gifts. Which means that it's also time to think about TOYS! We've updated all our lists of favorite toys for blind children, keeping our old favorites and adding lots of new ones, too.

You can check out our list of Christmas gifts for kids of all ages, toys for visually impaired babies, or toys for visually impaired toddlers. If you're thinking about getting your kids some video games, check out our list of accessible video games for blind kids. And don't forget about our favorite toy, the Bilibo.

Ivan touching a bookBooks also make wonderful gifts, so be sure to read our articles on our favorite tactile books for blind kids, where to find braille books on the internet, and a new resource we just discovered called ReadHowYouWant.

In preparation for all those holiday parties and get togethers, it's probably a good idea to read Mary's article on surviving the holidays where she gives her advice on how to keep the festivities safe and entertaining for blind children. You should also look into how you can get a free braille letter from Santa from NFB.

Happy Holidays!

Retinal microchipBreakthroughs in both gene therapy and retinal implants are still in the news. Corey Haas, an adorable little boy undergoing gene replacement therapy for LCA, was interviewed on the CBS Early Show. You can watch the video Here. Also, Peter Lane in Manchester England discusses his "bionic eye" implant and his improvements in vision. Read more.

Perkins has uploaded some very cool videos on how to create a Communication Portfolio for children with speech delays and they have also just launched their new Accessible Science web site designed to encourage science learning for all abilities.

You may also want to check out this cool book I found at Ivan's PT office, It Doesn't Look Like a Monster. It's the story of a little girl with CP who visits Fenway Park. Finally, WGBH just announced the release of new descriptive video DVDs for the visually impaired. Very cool.

From Boston Children's Music you can find out about our favorite new Holiday CDs or read about some really cool local musicians from Massachusetts. The 2009 Fids & Kamily Awards were also announced last month. Check out the best new kids CDs from 2009!
