| This Month's Newsletter Letter from the RA Summer is an easy time to let our writing and illustrating slip to the slide. I know as school is out and the pool is calling, it’s harder to find time to create. Keep in touch with your fellow creatives and your goals within reach by joining us this month for an exciting round-table meeting on Saturday, July 17. If you are an illustrator, I encourage you to head over to Abilene on July 10 for the Golden Kite Exhibit and SCBWI event. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event and the Illustrator Board Members of the SCBWI have worked hard to bring a great program together for us and it’s free! If you would like to carpool, please email me. We are gearing up for our fall Editors’ Day. Would you like to read an encouraging success story from our last conference? Click on this interview with Janet Fox, former RA from Brazos Valley, who met her agent at our last event and has since sold her first novel. You could make that important connection at our Editors’ Day in September. Sign up today! What a great way to get back into the swing of things after the summer. We’ve kept the cost down and added in an afternoon of breakout sessions for more value. The breakout sessions include a writing workshop with award-winning author Carmen Tafolla, First Pages sessions with our editors and an illustration session with myself and art director Art Alvina. You can register online or print out a registration form to register offline. Have a safe and fun 4th of July and I’ll see you on the 17th! Heather Powers Regional Advisor
Kristi Holl
At the July 17 SCBWI Schmooze, Kristi Holl will be facilitating the segment on "Time Management for Writers and Illustrators." Kristi is the author of 34 middle grade books plus the adult book for writers, WRITERS FIRST AID: GETTING ORGANIZED, GETTING INSPIRED, AND STICKING TO IT. Kristi also created the WRITER'S FIRST AID blog (after Heather Powers' excellent workshop four years ago); the blog now has over 34,000 subscribers. ( http://institutechildrenslit.net/Writers-First-Aid-blog ) Time management--getting organized and getting the writing/illustrating done--is a huge issue for creative people. Conquer this and half the battle is over!
MEMBER NEWS On Saturday, June 5, the Book Fairy (aka Laurie Brown) was the honored guest to kick off the library's summer reading program. There were hot dogs, popcorn, fairy dust, and lots of fun. The Book Fairy sprinkled her magic Fairy Dust on everyone at the library- yes, even the adults and teens. The most fun was had by the kids who read with her and learned how she became the Book Fairy. Everyone was encouraged to take part in the San Antonio Public Library's summer reading program.
