Energy Audit Training Day at St Marks CEC

A feasibility study has recently been carried out by Rosemary Kay of the Confederation of Social Enterprises (CoSE) concerning the establishment of a procurement framework for the third sector on Greater Merseyside.

St Marks Community and Enterprise Centre
St Marks CEC is a registered charity and social enterprise operating in Northwood, Kirkby. The charity runs a community and enterprise centre, which is a combination of office space and community rooms. (This is made of the old 'church hall' and 'vicarage').

The charities aim is to enable community members and groups to have easy access to organisations which exist for their benefit, as well as providing a charitable hub where various organisations can network and link in with one another.

St Marks CEC currently have three existing tenants; Tomorrows People, Prism Foundation and Community Cooks who all operate very successfully on this basis.

Refreshed Compact is Published
A completely re-worked, slimmed-down version of the Compact has been launched. The 'refreshed' compact aims to define and set out an agreement as to how public and third sector organisations should treat each other.

Social Investment Bank should be 'independent of government'
A consultation carried out by the Office of the Third Sector has revealed that the majority of respondents wish to see the proposed Social Investment Wholesale Bank 'independent' of both government and private sector retailers.

Unite 'fails to grasp' social enterprise, says HCT boss
Following a second strike by HCT staff, Dai Powell, boss of the HCT group, has accused trade union Unite of 'failing to grasp' social enterprise. Unite have accused HCT of 'getting fat' off the backs of workers, despite the company reinvesting  its surpluses into the community.

The Labour Party continues to push community involvement in public services with the call from cabinet minister Tessa Jowell that enterprises owned by staff or communities should have a greater involvement in the running of social services.

Funding News

Modernisation Fund investment available for a limited time
If you are running a social enterprise and in need of funds to strengthen and modernise your organisation then the Modernisation Fund may be able to help. The Modernisation Fund is able to offer third sector organisations loans at 0% interest.

Grassroots Grants
Managed by the Community Development Foundation and funded by the Office of the Third Sector Grassroots Grants can provide non-profit or community groups grants of between £250-£5000. Social enterprises can apply for Grassroots Grants provided they meet the criteria.

Learning Launchpad
Learning Launchpad is a fund designed to support social enterprises that seek to raise the aspirations and release the potential of young people aged 14-25. The fund helps organisations grow or get off the ground through a combination of financial investment and tailored support.

Grants for Social Enterprises working in health and social care
The Social Enterprise Investment Fund is offering two grants for social enterprises working in health and social care. Start Up Grants and Growth Grants offering between £50,000 and £200,000.
