Keeping in touch with current and past customers is something we all know we should do but aren’t always very good at. Since gaining new business from past and existing customers is much easier than finding new ones, really it’s a no brainer not to do it. Savvy marketers keep in touch with their customers in many ways, so here’s a few online and offline ideas to get you re-contacting past clients and staying in touch with existing ones.
1. Write to them If it’s been a while since you were in touch with some customers, you may feel a bit embarrassed about phoning, so write to them and perhaps offer them a free consultation so you can find out how they’re getting on and review what you did for them. If you use this method, follow up the letter by phone so let them know you’ll be calling next week, and of course, call them! Most people will be happy to speak to you and meet with you and you never know, you may actually get some new business.
2. Email marketing If you send out a newsletter, make sure your customers are on your email list. It’s a great way of keeping in touch and ensuring your customers are aware of the range of products and services you sell. Email is by far one of the easiest and cheapest ways of keeping in touch and most providers will give you detailed stats about who’s opened your emails and which links recipients find interesting. So you can even find out if your customers are opening your newsletters!
3. Social networks If your customers are on social sites such as Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook, then connect with them to maintain the relationship you have with them. You can find out more about what they’re up to so can offer appropriate help, as well as keep your name in front of them. Keeping in touch via the social networks is much more informal, and you may also discover a new side to your clients!
4. Send personalized letters or emails If you have long term consultancy clients that you’ve got to know quite well, then why not send them snippets of information you come across that they may find useful. For example, some research or an article you may have come across. When you send it, you’re not asking for anything and you may well be remembered for being helpful / thoughtful and providing excellent customer service.
5. Special occasions Christmas is often a good time to reconnect, but I find physical cards (and even a small thank you gift) can work well and show you appreciate their custom. If you have your own premises then organize a get together where you can catch up with customers and they can network with each other.
None of these ideas need to be expensive or time consuming, but often it’s the smallest things that can really make a difference between customers remembering you and continuing to do business with you, or forgetting about you! Make sure 2010 is the year you keep in touch with your customers and make the most of new technology to make it even easier for you!
