Olympic Flame to arrive in Niagara Falls on
Sunday, December 20, 2009 for Community Celebration
The Olympic Flame arrives in our community in just 20 days and the torch will be proudly carried by Olympian, Order of Canada recipient, and Niagara Falls resident - Gordon Singleton, selected as the City of Niagara Falls Community Torchbearer, to light the celebration cauldron for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay at our Olympic Torch Relay Celebration on Sunday, December 20, 2009.
To celebrate the arrival of the flame, the community is planning an exciting and memorable event on Sunday December 20th at 6:00 p.m. across from Table Rock at the brink of the Falls in the Falls Parking Area. Midway through the two-hour celebration program, Gord Singleton will carry the Olympic Torch on its final 300 metres to the stage where he will light the1.3-metre high celebration cauldron, in a move similar to the dramatic highlight of what will occur during the Opening Ceremony for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
The entire community is encouraged to bring their enthusiasm and energy to help "Cheer on the Flame" as it makes its way along the Relay Route by wearing red and white, waving flags, lighting up the night with lanterns and candles, making signs of encouragement for the torchbearers and loudly cheering them on! This evening celebration is intended to be a fun-filled and memorable community event providing an opportunity for quality time in the spirit of the Olympic movement and camaraderie. Route details will be released approximately one week before the event.
The 106-day Olympic Torch Relay, which is presented by Coca-Cola and RBC and supported by the Government of Canada, will visit more than 1,030 communities and places of interest in every province and territory. On February 12, 2010, the Olympic Flame will make its way to downtown Vancouver to light the Olympic Cauldron in a magical and awe-inspiring moment before a television audience of three billion people worldwide, signalling the kick off to the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
