Dear Good News Magazine Subscriber,
How is your health care working for you?
In the United States, health care is on the minds of most people at the moment. Everyone, it seems, is concerned about whether the system can be improved or whether it will become a nightmare of complex government rules. Meanwhile, more and more Americans are taking up exercise programs and careful diets in an effort to preserve health and live longer. Perhaps you are among them.
How many of us give the same attention to our spiritual health that we give to the health of our physical bodies? Both are important, but not equally so. The Bible tells us, "For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come" (1 Timothy 4:8). While it is a great idea to take care of your physical health, it is spiritual health that will really give you a life worth living for eternity. And spiritual health profits both now and in the future.
These two elements of health—the physical and the spiritual—can overlap. For example, we read in Proverbs 17:22 that "a merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones." A broken spirit refers to such things as discouragement, despondency and depression. God says these conditions will dry the bones—in other words, lead to death. But a merry heart can lift the spirits and make one feel better, even improving physical health.
How can we maintain a merry heart? One way is to believe the promises of God and put our hope in the future God has planned for us. Promises like, "Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom" (Luke 12:32). Or another one from Jesus: "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also" (John 14:3).
