Dear Good News Magazine Subscriber,
It's not a good sign when a year-end Rasmussen poll shows that two out of three U.S. voters think the country is heading in the wrong direction.
Their deep concerns cover a number of areas. Almost 60 percent of American voters oppose the massive health-care overhaul proposed by Congress, and nearly 80 percent expect it to cost more than expected. Almost 40 percent now believe that the giant $787 billion stimulus plan passed last February actually did more to hurt the economy than help it. Only 29 percent think the U.S. economy is improving, compared to 47 percent who believe it’s getting worse.
Barely a third believe America and its allies are winning the war on terror. Almost 80 percent believe another terrorist attack on U.S. soil is likely sometime this year. And after the nearly successful attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner recently, who can blame them?
Clearly Americans are feeling a deep sense of unease. And after a year in which the U.S. economy—not to mention America's worldwide power and prestige—took a severe beating, they should feel a deep sense of unease.
Students of the Bible are well aware that God raises kings, nations and empires to prominence, and He can just as easily remove them (Daniel 2:21). Through His prophets God foretold the rise and fall of such ancient empires as Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome. Though few recognize it, He also foretold the rise of the British Empire and the United States to world prominence and domination over the last two centuries.
A shocking statement? Yes! But it’s right there in Scripture for those willing to examine the evidence and accept what the Bible says.
Bible prophecy does tell us a great deal about America's rise to greatness. The problem is that most Bible readers fail to understand biblical history and thus fail to recognize how the major English-speaking nations of our day are identified in biblical prophecy.
God's Word also tells us that we reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7). This holds true not only of individuals, but also of nations. And make no mistake: America's current troubles that could threaten her survival are simply proof of that inescapable fact. Having increasingly turned their backs on the God who gave them a fabulously wealthy land and wonderful blessings of all kinds, Americans are now beginning to reap the bitter harvest of what they have sown by their actions.
