Christopher Sweetnam-HolmesWe're excited to have Christopher back at Yestermorrow this month to teach Invisible Structures: Strategies Beyond Building Green. This innovative course explores the idea that designing and developing sustainable community is about more than just buildings. The course will examine what economic, legal, contractual, cultural, marketing and communications strategies -- so-called "invisible structures" -- can be combined with sustainable building practices to initiate long term sustainable communities.

Christopher is founder and a partner in EcoCité, a national green development and consulting firm based in Montreal. Christopher believes that social and environmental entrepreneurship can be a powerful way to affect change. This belief has been translated in the development of his EcoLoft, EcoCondo and EcoCité housing concepts, setting the standard for urban housing, with aggressively green, innovatively designed, urban homes. Winner of the McGill University Management Award (2005) and the Berkeley Prize for Architecture, from the University of California at Berkeley (2001), Christopher has been featured in numerous media for his innovative housing ideas. Most recently he was included in "The Great Warming" a major documentary series that aired on the Discovery Channel, and PBS. EcoCité's Abondance Montreal, a 21 unit Net Zero Energy development in Montreal recently won a competition sponsored by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) as part of its Equilibrium Housing Initiative. Christopher has taught at Yestermorrow since 2007.

Class Spotlight:
Art in the English Garden

July 19-27, 2009

Art in the English GardenCome explore the history of stone walling and the wonders of rural England. This 10 day course, led by nationally recognized stone mason Thea Alvin, provides the full English garden experience, from studying well-developed gardens and walls to the incomplete one on which participants will be working. The setting is in the rural, southwest English countryside, next to a stone bridge reputed to be 3000 years old, among hills with cairns and burial mounds, sacred circles, and wild ponies. The project, at the country estate where students will stay, includes stair building, stone walling and sculpture-making, and garden path planning and creation. The class will do as much stonework as time allows, and then break out into the wild countryside for fly fishing, moor walking, and exploration of castles, pubs, and local villages (see daily schedule). The estate is a three-hour train ride from London.  $2000 tuition includes lodging and all meals. For details and to register online, visit: http://yestermorrow.org/courses/mmbs/english.htm.
