Student Profile: Guthrie Smith 2007 Home Design/Build
Guthrie Smith was one of those folks who thought about coming to Yestermorrow for many years before finally signing up for a course-- 16 years in fact! After having built a log cabin in the 1970s and other small structures along the way, she knew she could do it, but wanted to experience the whole design/build process and finally create the house of her dreams. The result, which was recently completed in Huntington, Vermont, is an inspiring example of what Yestermorrow graduates can accomplish.
Guthrie recently wrote: "I waited many years for the right time to take this class, and as much as I looked forward to it, I could never have imagined it being quite as helpful and life-changing as it was! I was involved in every aspect of the design of the house, practicing my newly-acquired drafting skills, and tried my hand at as much as I felt able to do in the building process. During the year of building, I did some basic carpentry work, window and door trim, laid and cut tile. Now, among other things, I’m making some shelves and cabinets, a result of another great Yestermorrow class!" Read more about Guthrie's story on the Yestermorrow blog.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN… Bold, provocative, daring, visionary. Design shapes every element of our lives, from the buildings we live and work in to the cars we drive, down to the shoes on our feet. Through the power of cinema, the audience will immerse themselves in the designer’s world and experiences through an unparalleled program of feature-length films, engaging documentaries and energetic short films highlighting the important role of architecture and design in culture and society. The festival will highlight films profiling visionary designers, the process of design, and the brilliant design products we see and use everyday. All films will be shown at the Big Picture Theater in Waitsfield, VT and proceeds from the festival will benefit Yestermorrow. www.adfilmfest.com.
Class Spotlight- Reuse: Recycle July 26-August 1, 2009
This six-day course class is about learning to use recycled materials to create built works—shelters, furniture, art or really anything that you might want to make—from re-purposed materials that have been discarded. The method of repurposing will be drawn from a tradition of making called bricolage in which found materials are reused and nothing is wasted. Students will examine the work of other artists and architects as a way of approaching the found materials. The goal is to come away from the class with a vocabulary of making that applies to the reuse of materials and an experience of the improvisational design/build process that can be carried over into your own creative endeavors. The course will culminate in a public exhibition at Yestermorrow open to the local community on Saturday. Tuition: $750. College credits and scholarships available.
