Masonry Classes in Europe

Renovation class in action
This summer Yestermorrow offers two great opportunities to travel abroad while trying your hand at traditional masonry techniques. The three week course Masonry Restoration Design/Build in Italy (July 18-August 7) will offer students experience in preservation, restoration, and adaptive re-use of historic vernacular masonry buildings in the Piedmont region. The site is the abandoned village of Ghesc, near Domodossola. Students will analyze and document existing structures and devise strategies and designs for the re-use of selected buildings while maintaining their historic features. Studio design time will be supplemented with hands-on construction on stabilization and restoration projects within the village. Field trips off-site, guided by an architectural historian, will be scheduled to supplement the main work of the course. This course, taught in English, is open to students of all ages with an interest in architecture, historic preservation and masonry construction. Check out the course description, photos and syllabus at www.yestermorrow.org.

The second course, Stone Walling in the English Garden  is a chance to learn traditional English stone masonry techniques.   In the garden of an estate in the remote and magical English countryside, this class will focus on building two complex, sloped retaining walls with double-faced walls atop them, in addition to a pair of staircases leading to the garden’s upper level.  The 8-day course runs August 17-25.  Check out the course description and syllabus at www.yestermorrow.org.

On Friday each of the 8 students will present their work from the past 10 weeks. The public is welcome and light refreshments will be served.

Architects Take Center Stage30th Anniversary Logo
Architects take center stage this May as Yestermorrow board member and instructor Kyle Bergman presents June Finfer’s play The Glass House at The Clurman Theater at 410 West 42nd Street in New York. The design and building of Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House and Philip Johnson’s Glass House is the background for The Glass House's penetrating plot that entwines the epic conflict between artist and patron. The play, performed by the Resonance Ensemble, explores the classic dramatic struggles of ambition, passion and betrayal. Performances will run May 9 through June 5. Friends of Yestermorrow can get special ticket pricing ($15.00) with the coupon code 'GLSS'  through Ticket Central at 212.279.4200 or at www.ticketcentral.com.

Certificate Student Organizes Volunteer Project
As part of his Practicum project, current Sustainable Building & Design Certificate student Spencer Warnock is organizing volunteers for a home renovation and environmental clean-up in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  Warnock has spent the last ten years developing relationships with several Native American families in South Dakota and has used the Certificate in Sustainable Building and Design to connect his passion and love for finding a better way to live, with his passion to create, renovate and build things. He is looking for volunteers for help with this project in May and June. More information on how to join...

Moving Forward with Semester Program
We’re thrilled to embark on the planning and design of Yestermorrow’s new semester program in sustainable design/build, scheduled to launch in Fall 2011.  This innovative new program will bring college students to Yestermorrow for a semester-long immersion in the world of design/build, learning core concepts of ecological design along with hands-on building skills.  With start-up funding from an anonymous foundation we have hired Jonathan Mingle to work with us over the next 8 months as a consultant and Semester Program Coordinator. More information on Jon...
