Community Project at Wheeler Brook Apartments
This summer’s 2-week Community Design/Build class is hard at work this week on a project for the new Wheeler Brook Apartment in Warren, VT. Partnering with Housing Vermont and the Central Vermont Community Land Trust, the 14 students in the course have designed and are in the midst of constructing an outdoor pavilion for community use by the new residents. The 18-unit housing project was designed by William Maclay Architects and Planners of Waitsfield, and the buildings feature a variety of green building technologies, including a super insulated foundation, walls and roof, solar collectors on the roofs that provide solar domestic hot water for all 18 units, and energy recovery ventilation. The Community Design/Build course is led by Steve Badanes, Bill Bialosky and Jim Adamson and brings together a variety of students from the fields of architecture, planning, landscape architecture and environmental design to work through a group design process. The public dedication for the new pavilion will be held at the site, on the Sugar Bush Access Road in Warren, this Friday, August 7th at 4pm. There were many experiences during the course that seemed to prepare me for the next steps of becoming an entrepreneur. Most importantly (more...) Yestermorrow Partners with Chelsea Green PublishingWe’re excited to announce a new partnership with our friends at Chelsea Green Publishing. For 25 years, Chelsea Green has been the publishing leader for books on the politics and practice of sustainable living. We’ve been selling their books in our Yestermarket bookshop for many years and they have been favorites of our students. This summer Ed Dooley of Mad River Media has been filming segments of our summer 2009 Natural Building Intensive program for a future DVD. We’re also in discussions about developing new book titles written by Yestermorrow faculty. Stay tuned for more details as this video project emerges.
