Acupuncture and TMD
TMD stands for Temporomandibular joint Disorder (or for the rest of us, problems with your jaw joint). Some people may experience this as:
Popping or clicking
Pain in the joint upon chewing
Headaches or facial pain
The jaw getting "stuck" either open or closed
Inability to open the mouth very far
The causes of TMD are unknown, but some potential causes are:
Stress causing muscle tension in the face and neck
Grinding or clenching of the teeth
Arthritis in the joint
Motor-vehicle accidents
Structural anomalies in the jaw or joint itself
Many people who experience TMD also have extremely tight neck and shoulder muscles which also contribute to the disorder. Acupuncture is a great modality for relieving the pain associated with TMD, as well as helping the surrounding muscles to relax.
Atopic Dermatitis in Pets
We've all seen the cat or dog who has allergies and has scratched themselves hairless and raw. Some of us have even had to deal with helping our pets through such an uncomfortable disorder.
Standard treatment is placing the pet on a hypoallergenic diet to attempt to get to the cause of the allergies and corticosteroids to attempt to put a stop to that incessant itch-scratch cycle. Some pets respond well to these changes, but others may not.
For those who are still itchy even after all that biomedicine has to offer has been tried, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be extremely helpful in stopping the allergy cycle. Often the underlying cause of allergies is an immune system that is too weak and thus overreacts to everything. Chinese medicine will not only get rid of the current allergic symptoms (itching and redness) but also strengthen the immune system so that there is no longer an overreaction.
