| Building an Ethic of Engagement in public services Supermarket-style approaches have taken public services so far, but the next phase of improvement relies on their ability to engage citizens and staff. This week, Innovation Unit published a think-piece suggesting that co-operatives and mutuals could play an important role in putting the public back in public services. While some public service leaders are looking to the likes of Easyjet for inspiration, the paper suggests that the mutualism of John Lewis may also have something to teach public services. | Co-operative schools: the future of schooling? Schools have quietly made a start on the mutualism agenda through the creation of Co-operative Schools. With politicians on all sides now pushing to accelerate the this agenda, these schools may tell us more than we thought about the education providers of the future. But with more change possible, the question is not only how quickly their numbers will grow but how policy-makers may look to deepen and extend the co-operative principles at their heart. | Get the Shout Out! – The Power of Student Voice Get the Shout Out! Is a collaboration between The English Secondary Students’ Association (ESSA) and Phoenix Education Trust. The project enables disengaged young people to get their voices heard and create positive changes about issues which affect their lives at school or college.
