Happy New Year!
In this first issue of the Sage-Thyme Gemstone Newsletter for 2010, we will focus on new beginnings! Moonstone
Moonstone is a stone of new beginnings, strongly connected to the moon and the quality of intuition, often called the visionary's stone. Once named the traveler's stone, moonstone was used for protection against the perils of travel and often serves as a talisman of good fortune, said to keep closer that which is dear to one. Its energy is balancing, introspective, reflective, and lunar. Moonstone is a stone of hoping and wishing, allowing one to absorb that which is needed from the universal energies, not necessarily that which is wanted. Use moonstone for success, inspiration, introspection, and the calming of emotions.
In India moonstone has long been regarded as the perfect gemstone for women. The moving spirit-light inside the stone evokes the essence of the waxing and waning of the moon and reminds us that everything is part of a cycle of change. Moonstone is well-known for easing menstrual cramps, offers excellent help for PMS, conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and breast-feeding. Filled with receptive, passive, feminine energy, moonstone balances male-female energies and enhances the feminine side of one’s nature, aiding men who wish to get in touch with their feminine side.
Moonstone provides spiritual nourishment and sustenance along with loving compassion to further assist one through all changes. This stone is also known to stimulate confidence and composure, as well as arouse tenderness within the self. Moonstone brings happiness to the environment within which it resides. For healing, it aligns the vertebra, aids digestion, assimilates nutrients, and eliminates toxins.
Geologically moonstone is a variety of the common mineral feldspar. Colors may be creamy, white, yellow, or pink with a soft lustrous translucent sheen shot with flashes of blue. Specimens are easily obtained in India, Sri Lanka, and Australia.
Crystals and the Zodiac
Astrology allows us to realize our natural purpose on Earth in accordance with the synchronicity of the cosmos. Stones are equally sensitive to the vibratory frequencies emitted from the planets and stars, and receive their various qualities, in part, from the heavenly bodies, just as we do. The idea of a birthstone connected with the month of your birth is based in traditional astrology. Each of the twelve signs of the zodiac includes traditional crystal affinities based on the month of birth, as well as others from the planets connected to a sign. These astral stones ground and amplify celestial energies. Yet no stone is wholly composed of the energies of one single sign or planet, so you will often find one stone connected to many astrological signs. No central authority exists as to which gemstones are connected to each sign of the zodiac; conflicting information exists based on various traditions around the globe. You should select the stone that feels right for you.
In this issue, we will explore two of the stones associated with Capricorn (Dec 22 – Jan 19).
Fluorite
The word fluorite (pronounced floor-ite) derives from the Latin fluor, meaning “to flow.” Fluorite is highly protective, especially on a psychic level. This stone will help to integrate spiritual energies in a balanced way to any level of the body. It will encourage orderliness and structure and can be especially helpful at improving levels of physical coordination and mental agility. Indeed, fluorite is the best crystal for overcoming any form of disorganization. It increases one’s ability to concentrate by balancing both positive and negative relationships of the mind. Fluorite also provides a stabilizing energy, helping relationships, groups and individuals to flourish in a way beneficial to all. Place a stone by your computer as it is also highly effective against computer and geopathic stress.
Fluorite is a powerful healing tool, the perfect gift for someone who is ill, as it helps to nourish the energies of the body, providing purification, cleansing, and elimination of that which is in disorder. It strengthens teeth, cells, bones, repairs DNA damage, helps with nerve-related pain, and rekindles sexual libido.
Fluorite often has bands of different colors that run through the stone. Rainbow fluorite appears primarily with transparent purple, violet, clear, and green bands, though often a small stone or bead will only be violet or green. Golden Rainbow Fluorite displays large bands of yellow along with green and violet. The stone is soft and easily scratched.
Malachite
The word malachite (pronounced mal-ah-kite) comes from the Greek word malache meaing “mallow leaf.” This beautiful stone is always kelly green-black with variegated patterns.
Malachite is a powerful stone, known as the stone of transformation, assisting and encouraging risk-taking and change as well as bringing harmony into one’s life. Malachite helps in the clearing and activation of all of the chakras, attuning one to receive spiritual guidance. This stone helps one to accept responsibility for one’s actions, circumstances, and actuality, bringing understanding and intuitive answers.
Malachite is a versatile healing stone, particularly useful for cramps, facilitating childbirth, and the treatment of any sexual disease. Malachite relaxes the nervous system and treats asthma, arthritis, bad eyesight, cramps, and rheumatism.
Historically malachite was considered an appropriate talisman for children and was often attached to the side of an infant’s cradle. In addition it has a significant copper content which can encourage the growth of plants.
