Our Carbon Footprint Survey showed that flights make up a huge portion of our University's impact on the environment. If you don't own a car, then swapping your ticket can make a huge difference.

Isn't the train more expensive?

Sometimes this is true, but fairly often once you get to Europe the train is one of the cheapest options. Also, if you take a sleeper train you can get a room for the night and transport for less than the cost of a hotel room and a flight.

Plus, you can get huge travel discounts, with 10% off 16-25 Railcards until December 2010 and Culture Connect for even more discounts this summer.

Isn't the train slower?

No! The plane is faster in the sky, but once you include check-in, security and the distance between the airport and most cities, flying can often be slower. The Telegraph tested this with a race from London to Paris, and the train won.

The science

Saving refers to 320kg CO2e for a return flight to central Europe versus 214kg CO2e by train. Extra miles are included to account for the larger distance a train must travel. Emissions factors from DEFRA.
