The Animal House "Notes" Vol #45 Good Afternoon, Friends o' The Animal House!
Been awhile, I know. Things have been very busy at the "House", but newsletters will be much more forthcoming in the future...promise! Lots to report...I (Aubrey) have been working at home on our website, which has taken off like a rocket (see why below!!) and to prepare for the arrival of our little boy from India, Atharv. *Dan, meanwhile, has taken the reigns at the store, and is available for consultations everyday except Wednesdays and some Sundays. * Dan-Dan-the-food-man is here to help you with nutrition, supplement or homeopathy questions, and will even take your purchases out to your car for ya. That's just the kind of guy he is.
News:
Very exciting for us: * The Animal House has won a very prestigious award in the pet community: Pet Product News Retailer of the Year: Best Web Presence. *Dan-Dan-the-Food- Man, is also Dan-Dan-the-Web-Man, as he is our web developer extraordinaire. We launched our site about a year and a half ago, as an informational and e-commerce site. Our site features advice columns like Dear Abby, DVM, a Kitty Cam, recently ranked top 10 Web Cams, a list of adoption resources, blog, plus, of course, our online store. We are so proud of this recognition in the industry, and encourage you to check it out: www.theanimalhouse.net. It is a valuable tool for both local and not-so-local people, and we hope you think so, too! A press release will be out soon announcing this award, but if you see Dan, the man behind the curtain, be sure to give him a pat on the back for a job well-done!!
-As most of you know, we are a satellite location for the Humane Society of Knox County. To date, *we have adopted out over 100 cats and kittens through our Adoption Center at The Animal House.* All adoption fees go directly to Knox County, and we are lucky enough to take care of these little ones until we find them the right family. Thank you so much for supporting us, and for adopting so many kitties. There are more cats out there who need homes, and we are just happy to help. Swheat Scoop, one of our litter companies, has generously donated "kitty packs" to those who adopt a cat or kitten through our Adoption Center. We are just awaiting the arrival of new cats at the store...stay tuned, and remember to keep watching our Kitty Cam.
-*Got fleas? * We got you covered! Get rid of them the natural way! Azmira Paraclear Diatomaceous Earth is great for indoors with no toxicity to pets or people. Earth Animal Internal Powders keeps dogs flea and tick free year round...and we have a whole host of topical repellents and shampoos for dogs and cats with no chemicals. Pet-friendly, environmentally safe...and it works! Don't forget to schedule a groom or self-service wash if you would like us to take care of the fleas and ticks for you!
-*CONTEST!* Win a Litter Robot Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box (value $349) with the "Cutest Kitty Contest". Take a photo of your kitty/kitties in their cutest pose and email it in or drop it off to the store. All entries must be received by December 24th, and will be posted on our website. *Meet Loki.* Loki came to us courtesy of Petfinder, via Canine Guardians for Life. Loki, a firecracker of a doggie, has special dietary needs. This month, we will be featuring Loki's diet as an example of what we feed our own four-legged family:
_Age_: approx 6 years _Breed_: Border Collie mix _Issue:_ Seizures of indeterminate cause _Loki's protocol:_ Loki has always been fed a grain-free raw diet, but Dr. Strobbe of Medomak Veterinary Care recommended that we change her protein to a more "cooling" food, such as turkey or duck. Cooling foods help with hyperactivity in the brain (or in Loki's case, generalized hyperactivity!). Treats:_ Barkwheats Chamomile, Stella & Chewy's Duck Food_: Sojo's Complete Dehydrated Grain-Free Turkey Supplements_: Settle Seizures from Herbsmith, NaturVet probiotics Etc:_ Dr. Strobbe has done a few rounds of Acupuncuture.
Since we started her on this regime,...voila! Seizure free!
*Next month: *Sadie, with a sensitive pancreas.
Frequent Buyer/Frequent Bather:_ Don't forget to use your Frequent Buyer card every time you check out. Buy 12 bags (same brand, same size) get your 13th bag free! Also, when you use our Self Service Dog Wash, be sure to use our Frequent Bather Card!
Suds! Need to have your doggie or kitty all spruced up for the howl-idays? Make an appointment for a bath and trim at SUDS! Grooming at The Animal House. A link to our Grooming Menu: http://www.animalhouseblog.com/grooming/
*Be sure to call in soon; appointments fill up fast.* And remember, we do nail trims! Nail trim appointments are available everyday except Wednesdays and Sundays.
That's all folks...have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We all have a lot to be thankful for!
Regards,
The Animal House

Dear Abby DVM
Dear Abby, I actually have a real question…this totally grosses me out but I’m sure there’s an explanation for why it happens. We have two male labs…Sam (yellow, 10) and Kernel (black, 8). I keep the yard picked up regularly (daily, if not more), but without fail Sam finds pleasure in eating Kernel’s poo. Why does he do this? Other than standing immediately behind them while they’re doing their business (which is not always possible anyways), what can I do to prevent this? It even happens right after they eat a meal. YUCK! Thanks Doc -Aaron
