Jim Gardner's Energy Tech Talk Blog: We Believe in Crazy
Read Jim's latest energy blog at http://jimgardner.ozarksnewenergy.org/ where he talks about a Popular Science article proposing high-rise urban "farms" for the future. Sounds crazy, but roof-top gardens are already a fact so why not a self-contained farm in a skyscraper?
Walmart Installs Thin Film Solar
The world's largest retailer, Walmart, has announced it will install thin film solar technology systems in 20 to 30 stores in the U.S. The systems utilize semiconductors about one micron thick and are lighter and cheapter than traditional crystalline wafer panels. The thin film utilizes copper iridium gallium selenide and cadmium telluride.
According to Walmart, it hopes to supply each location with 20% to 30'% of its total energy needs, producing up to 22.5 million kilowatt hours of clean energy per year and restricting carbon dioxide production to 11,650 metric tons per year.
Walmart's ultimate goal is to use various technologies around the world to become a leading company supplied by 100% renewable energy. The retailer already purchases wind energy across Texas and Mexico and is in the process of testing geothermal energy, fuel cells, solar and wind power in Canada. Walmart currently has 31 stores equipped with solar installations in California and Hawaii.
