More Sessions--and Reasons--to Attend ONE 3
Every two weeks we're showcasing some of the sessions at the Ozarks New Energy Conference Oct. 7-8 in Springfield. For past newsletters and their highlights, go to www.ozarksnewenergy.org and look under News. Or just go to Conference Agenda and see the complete conference.
Be sure to take advantage of our early-bird rates (see below) for ONE 3. You'll get two full days of 30+ energy sessions, workshops, exhibits, networking, demonstrations, field trips and four meals for a terrific price. Where else in the Ozarks can you hear, meet and talk to energy researchers, entrepreneurs, advocates and users gathered under one roof to promote alternative, renewable energy?
Here are newly confirmed sessions and speakers:
Distributed wind energy - Charles Newcomb, chief technology officer of NexGen Energy Partners in Boulder, Colo., will bring us up to speed on a type of wind turbine that's a step down from the familiar ones at commercial wind farms. Hear his session on "Distributed Wind Energy Using Mid-sized Turbines: Market Opportunities, Hurdles & Strategies."
Perennial crops - Farmers and agribusiness owners won't want to miss our session on "Perennial Crops for Food, Fuel & Electricity." Our speaker is Trish Jackson of the Climate and Alternative Energy Project, affiliated with the Land Institute of Kansas, who will reference perennial grain research conducted by the Institute.
Natural gas - Granted, natural gas is a fossil fuel. But with huge reserves in the U.S., it may be the bridge fuel to energy independence and renewables. Phil Rullman of Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, a ONE 3 sponsor, will discuss "The Role of Natural Gas: Reserves, Markets, Pipelines."
PACE and clean energy - Renew Missouri's PJ Wilson will cover the past, present and future of Missouri's clean energy policy. He'll highlight true net metering, a 15%-by-2021 renewable energy standard for large utilities and a requirement that utilities invest in "all cost-effective" energy efficiency before building any new generation--all recently enacted Missouri laws. Pj also will explain PACE, signed into law by Governor Nixon this July, which allows cities and counties to opt into a program that issues bonds to pay up to 100% of the upfront costs of renewable energy and energy-efficiency renovations for homes and businesses. He'll conclude with a look at clean energy priorities for lawmakers in 2011 and beyond. Plan to attend his breakout on "Setting the PACE on Clean Energy in Missouri."
Heat pumps - Heat pumps can significantly reduce your home energy bills. Learn about air source and dual-fuel heat pumps from Carl Hamm of Connelly Mechanical and about groundsource heat pumps from Leroy Schaefer of Sunbelt Environmental Services.
Six Tracks in ONE 3: Take Your Pick
There's something of interest to virtually everyone at ONE 3. Here's a sneak preview of its six tracks:
Power generation - Smart grids, distributed wind energy, natural gas, modular nuclear, wood for power, small hydroelectric and carbon trading.
Green building - Net zero energy homes, LEED design and construction workshop, high-performance construction, green landscaping, solar for businesses, building sustainably in Greensburg (Kan.) and heat pumps.
Biofuels - Biochar, N-hydrogen3 (ammonia), wood for power, carbonless alternative fuel and pyrolysis demonstration.
Transportation - Alternatives to cars in town, future fuels for cars and trucks, high-speed passenger rail, public transportation and an alternative car show featuring commercial electric and hybrid vehicles. You also may see ultra-high mileage experimental vehicles from Ozark High School and Missouri University of Science & Technology.
Energy efficiency - Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance presentation on energy efficiency in Missouri, home energy audit workshop, PACE and clean energy priorities in Missouri, Missouri's energy plan by Department of Natural Resources Director Mark Templeton.
Food security - Urban farming, energy from agriculture and perennial crops for food and fuel.

Energy Tech Talk: Another Reason for Living Green
Jim Gardner looks back to the hippie generation and forward to a time when we all need to live in harmony with Mother Earth. He includes some links to carbon calculators for measuring your carbon footprint--the first step to more sustainable living. Read Jim's July blog on "Another Reason for Living Green" at http://jimgardner.ozarksnewenergy.org.
Jim invites your comments on his postings and suggestions for future blogs. He's an expert in biofuels but will tackle other promising alternative energy developments.

Nuclear in a Box: A New Approach
Last week Babcock & Wilcox Nuclear Energy and Bechtel Power Corporation announced an alliance to design, license and deploy the world's first commercially viable Generation III++ small modular nuclear power plant. The Virginia-based project will develop a nuclear power plant that essentially can be shipped to a prepared, secure site where it can generate 25 megawatts of electricity.
These smaller nuclear plants will be less expensive and scalable to local needs but will still have the same security and waste-disposal issues of larger nuclear plants.
Read more about the future of nuclear in a box at http://babcock.com/products/moduar_nuclear/gen_mpower.html and http://babcock.com/library/pdf/E2011002.pdf.
