Three More Weeks Before Early-bird Rates End for ONE 3

Remember our early-bird rates end Sept. 2. Get two full days of 30+ energy sessions, workshops, exhibits, networking, demonstrations, field trips and four meals for a terrific price.  Here are newly confirmed sessions and speakers. To see the complete conference, go to Conference Agenda at www.ozarksnewenergy.org.

Here are newly confirmed sessions and speakers:

Small nuclear - In the last issue of ONE Connects, we reported on a new approach to nuclear power generation. Babcock & Wilcox Nuclear Energy is partnering with Bechtel Power Corporation to build a 125-megawatt modular reactor that can be shipped to a prepared site and operate for 4 1/2 years before refueling. ONE is pleased to bring Michael Gregory of Babcock & Wilcox in Kansas City to share the vision of "Small Nuclear: Generation in a Box."

Sustainable business practices - One of our sponsors, the Partnership for Sustainability, will host a roundtable discussion over lunch Thursday about the importance of sustainability from big business to the average homeowner. Michael Garner of UMBank will moderate the discussion by John Twitty of City Utilities of Springfield, Duane Highley of Associated Electric Cooperative, Bob Norton of St. John's Health System and Rod Schaffer of CoxHealth.

Wood for power - Plans are underway to construct two wood-burning electric power generation plants in the Ozarks. Mike Mills of Spectrum Consulting Group will present the pros of using Missouri's forests and other wood residue to generate electricity. Henry Robertson with Great Rivers Environmental Law Center will present the cons.

Green residential - What's it like to live in a new green house? And what does it take to build one? Homeowner Richard Walter and builder Kelly Gunlock of southwest Missouri will share their perspectives in a session on building  and living in a green home.

Heat pumps - Heat pumps are an efficient means of cooling and heating your home. Learn about air source and dual-fuel heat pumps from Carl Hamm of Connelly Mechanical and about groundsource heat pumps from Leroy Schaefer of Sunbelt Environmental Services.

Urban farming - Melissa and Adam Millsap of Springfield are the founders of Urban Roots Farm. On less than an acre in the heart of Springfield they are growing vegetables and demonstrating sustainable small-scale agriculture. Learn how they got the city to permit them to have an urban farm and what their vision for the future is.

Demos on the Patio: a Sneak Preview

This year we're offering something new. From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, the conference will move outside to the patio on the north side of Plaster Student Union and the "commons" beyond it.  In addition to our Alternative Car Show, which you can view all day Thursday, we'll feature these demonstrations:

Steam engine - Mike Brown of Mike Brown Solutions will demonstrate one of the 1-, 3- and 20-hp steam engines manufactured by McGregor Manufacturing in Ozark.

SIPs - Lavern Ulesich of EnviroStructures will demonstrate how to build a structure, starting with two 8 x 8 ft. structurally insulated panels. The demonstration will show how a roof is attached and where electrical and plumbing are installed in the panels.

Biodiesel nano-technology - Our own blogger, Jim Gardner of Oakridge Consulting, will show off the equipment used in producting biodiesel in a privately funded research project with the University of Texas.  The project tested the technical viability of using proprietary nano-technology reactors.

Solar water heaters - Learn how solar water heaters work in a demonstration by Don Hendricks of Emerald Green Technologies, using a 30-tube array of tubular solar collectors.

Wood pellet pyrolysis unit - Dr. Thomas Pirotte  makes full use of available wind, solar, green building and biofuel technologies at his property in Republic. He'll show off the small pyrolysis unit, fueled by wood pellets, he uses for a variety of purposes, among them providing power to a generator used in emergencies.

Modified Energy Bills Await Votes in Senate and House

With the prospect of a Republican filibuster, the Senate Democrats abandoned the energy/climate change bill months in the crafting for a much more modest energy bill. The
new bill essentially:
  • Tightens oil-spill regulations
  • Provides $5 billion for the Land and Water Conservation Fund
  • Provides incentives for home efficiency investments through the President's HomeStar program, which creates rebates to retrofit houses
  • Provides $6 billion to invest in manufacturing natural gas-powered trucks
  • Invests $400 million in the infrastructure to support electric cars
Likewise, the House proposed a new energy bill that largely focuses on oil-spill regulations. Both bills are expected to be voted on the week of Aug. 9 before the summer recess. For details go to www.green.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/.../house-and-senate-roll-out-spill-bills/.
