Steering Committee to Oversee Changes to Undergraduate Education
The College of Architecture announced it will appoint a steering committee to oversee incremental changes to the undergraduate curriculum. The group will be made up of professionals from the industrial design, architecture and construction industries, and will provide key insight as ideas and research are brought to the table.

Together with Dean Alan Balfour, the steering committee will be tasked with:

  • conducting market research including job placement statistics and alumni focus groups;
  • assessing and preserving core disciplinary skills;
  • and assessing options, including an integrated curriculum that is complementary to current academic paths.
Associate dean for undergraduate education, Sabir Khan, will consult with the steering committee as he and the College of Architecture faculty draft a curriculum.

“Reactions to our plans to consider an integrated undergraduate curriculum have run the gamut--”some enthusiastic, some opposed and some just puzzled,” said Dean Alan Balfour. “I want to clarify there are no plans at this time to eliminate any degrees, and that no significant changes will be made to the undergraduate curriculum this year.”

“Our collective ambition is to make our undergraduates and graduates in ID, BC and Architecture the strongest, most talented leaders in their fields,” he stated. “And as is appropriate to Georgia Tech’s role as a leading research university, graduate programs in these fields deal with issues of advanced practice and research.”

The College of Architecture has experienced unprecedented growth in the last decade and is well positioned for these innovations. Its academic and research programs address the designed and built environment across a range of scales, drawing from Georgia Tech’s unmatched resources to engage the sciences, engineering and the humanities. The nine-year-old graduate program in Building Construction is now the largest graduate program in the College, and the graduate program in Industrial Design has also reached capacity.

At the undergraduate level, the College has invested nine years of ongoing experimentation and application through the Common First Year. Other schools of architecture, construction and design have experimented with innovations in ‘integrative,’ collaborative or cross-disciplinary design, at the scale of individual courses and the entire curriculum. They have found that each of the disciplines benefits from closer collaboration.

An internal re-organization has been put in place to address budget and space constraints, and to maintain the highest quality of student support at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
