Greetings Georgia Tech Parents:
Where has the time gone? It is hard to believe that the holidays are right around the corner. It can be a very busy time on campus as students prepare for end of the semester projects and final exams. Be sure to read in this month’s ParentNews advice from the experts on preparing for finals.
Another great resource, as we enter the final weeks of the semester, is the Parents Forum. The Parents Forum is a great place to post and read tips on surviving Winter Break with your student as well as helping your student find a ride home for the holiday break. If you are new to our message board, we have posted instructions for you!
We are also excited to announce the launch of our Family Weekend 2009 podcasts which cover three of this year’s more popular presentations: How to be Successful at Tech, What’s Next for Your Tech Student, and the State of the Institute with President Bud Peterson. We have also reloaded our Family Weekend Facebook page with lots of pictures from the weekend. Please become a fan today and upload your photos.
In addition, we invite you to meet our Parents Advisory Board members, dedicated individuals who act as the voice of all Georgia Tech parents and families to the vice president of Student Affairs and the dean of students. Board members also serve as Tech parent representatives at on-campus and regional events. Look forward to hearing more from the Parents Advisory Board members in future editions of ParentNews.

Fall 2009 Academic Success Workshops
The Office of Success Programs is offering free academic workshops in November to help students prepare for final exams. Students who are experiencing challenges in a particular area or are not performing to their expectations should take advantage of these free workshops as well as academic coaching. Diversity Week 2009: A Latitude Adjustment
During the week of November 9-13, join Diversity Programs, a department within the Office of the Dean of Students, in celebrating Diversity Week. Held each fall, Diversity Week is designed to promote heightened awareness, acceptance, and understanding of persons with diverse backgrounds within the Georgia Tech community. This year’s events include a series of lively presentations including the discussion of New York Times best seller The Shack, documentaries from students’ study abroad experiences, language workshops, and more. Undergraduate Research Kaleidoscope
Monday, November 9
7:00 p.m. in the Library East Commons (LEC)
Join us for a series of unique presentations on Undergraduate Research in the “Pecha Kucha” style. This no-nonsense format, along with the open space and informal setting should provide ample opportunities for the audience and presenters to interact during and after this lively event. This event is a follow-up to our first Undergraduate Research Kaleidoscope (URK) held last spring where presenters shared collaborative and often humorous work from eight different academic departments on campus. Today, nearly 100 years later, the Georgia Tech Division of Professional Practice (DoPP), through its Cooperative Education (Co-op) Program; Georgia Tech Internship Program (GTIP); Graduate Co-op Program; and Work Abroad Program; places student workers with employers, not only in the Atlanta area, but around the globe. When I was a senior in high school faced with choosing a college, Tech did not become my top choice until I attended the UGA vs. Tech football game in Bobby Dodd Stadium. My mind was easily made up as I left. This was not because Tech won, but rather because of my interaction with the people at the game.
As I observed the Tech alumni in their white and gold, cheering for their team with heart and energy, treating others with respect and exuding a sense of pride in their school, I knew I had identified a group I wanted to join. They were the peers I hoped to have in the future. It is this sense of pride I wanted to have for myself as I graduated. Read entire article...

Game Day Recycling
Georgia Tech Recycling has  gathered a team of students, faculty and staff who are working hard to make sure that the games are green. “Go Jackets! – Go Green!” is the motto for the Game Day Recycling Program, which collects plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass at football games and diverts it from the landfill. Tech Joins the Center for Sustainable Engineering
A federally funded center dedicated to raising awareness and improving education of sustainable engineering practices now counts Georgia Tech among its members. Created by The National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency in 2005, the Center for Sustainable Engineering (CSE) is charged with assisting engineering educators in the transition to a new engineering paradigm based upon the concept of sustainability. Tech Earns High Score on Green Report Card
For the second consecutive year, Georgia Tech garnered an overall grade of “B” on the annual College Sustainability Report Card. The Sustainable Endowments Institute issues the report to measure sustainability initiatives at colleges and universities. More info...
Georgia Tech Celebrates Dean Dull Day
October 23 marked Dean Dull day on Georgia Tech’s campus. James Edward Dull joined the Tech community in 1957 as assistant dean of students. Dull became the associate dean of students three years later, and in 1964, he was promoted to the dean of students. He remained at Tech until 1991, when he retired as vice president/dean of students emeritus. Dean Dull day was established by the Student Government Association in celebration of the many contributions Dull made to the Georgia Tech community. More info...
OMED Celebrates Three Decades at Tech
The Office of Minority Educational Development (OMED) celebrated three decades of assisting Tech's underrepresented students during Homecoming week. Begun in 1979, OMED’s mission is to provide programs and services that aid in the retention, development and performance of Georgia Tech students who are traditionally underrepresented in academia. Its services and programs, however, are available to all Tech students. More info...
Graduate Co-op Program Celebrates 25 Years
The Georgia Institute of Technology’s graduate co-op program, the nation’s largest, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The program, coordinated by the Institute’s Division of Professional Practice (DoPP), focuses on providing master’s and doctoral students with specialized work experiences. Despite challenging economic conditions, the program has remained viable, said Thomas M. Akins, DoPP executive director. “We have registered more than 2,460 students for work over the past four years,” Akins said. “Although we have felt the impact of the current economy like other programs, we have had more than 600 students work in graduate co-op positions in 2009.” More info...
