Valentine's Day falling on a Sunday and weak economy could cost florists

In addition to determining the price of roses and other flowers, lining up extra help to make floral arrangements or deliver flowers, and wondering if the recession is going to hurt their Valentine's Day business, florists have another concern this year.

Police: Injured toddler may lose his legs

A 2-year-old Santa Fe boy whom police believe was tightly bound with an unknown ligature late last month remained in stable condition Monday at an Albuquerque hospital.
Doctors continue to monitor the boy's progress in an intensive care unit but may have to amputate his legs, said Sgt. Louis Carlos, a Santa Fe Police Department spokesman.

Tougher DWI penalties derailed

Some state senators cited financial reasons as a Senate committee on Monday effectively killed a bill that would have increased DWI penalties.
There is no mandatory jail time for first-time drunken-driving offenders in New Mexico.

Railyard panel OK with razing part of building

The city Public Works Committee recommends demolishing Santa Fe Clay's part of a warehouse in the Santa Fe Railyard after a new tenant and use are approved.
The committee recommendation, which will go to the full City Council, came Monday after a lengthy public hearing.

Senate takes rare vote to override gov.'s veto

Simmering disagreements between lawmakers and the administration of Gov. Bill Richardson boiled over Monday, as the Senate sought to force state agencies to provide the Legislature with confidential information about contracts and programs.
The Senate voted 34-8 to override Richardson's veto last year of legislation passed after a state agency denied information about Medicaid to the Legislative Finance Committee.
