The Story Behind the New SeaRey Headquarters

The new SeaRey LSX headquarters is without a doubt the ideal location for SeaRey operations. The building lies on the shores of Lake Idamere near a small town in central Florida… Tavares, which has aspired to become the largest seaplane base on the US East Coast. Tavares has just completed a new $7 million seaplane base, marina and park. It will also feature premium auto gas and 100LL fuel stations.   We approached them a year and a half ago about who we are and what we do.   Right on the spot, the city leaders piled us into cars and drove us to this new building on SR19. We were stunned.   The layout of the building, access to the shoreline and distance from all other dwellings made it perfect for the SeaRey.

Many wheels began to turn. In a rare if not unheard of move in Florida, the city set about zoning the lake to permit seaplane operations… permanently!   This took a lot of work by a lot of people but never-the-less it was done in record time.

On to the next problem… money… we are a small company focused on designing and building seaplanes…not buying buildings and real estate.    Enter a small group of SeaRey customers who saw the building and immediately realized its potential as a SeaRey home and determinedly set about buying it. Again… many months work by many people and the building is now owned by SeaRey friends and enthusiasts. Very cool.

What is even cooler is the gigantic increase in efficiency this new building will afford. For the first time in 18 years all SeaRey operations are under one roof instead of three separate locations. Everything; sales, service, admin, R&D, builder assists, flight training will all be done from this one location.

Then came the move… if I said it once I said it a dozen times… you can put a company right out of business just by moving it.   Enter Flore Gunn who managed every detail of the move and together with dozens of SeaRey volunteers who brought trucks, trailers, elbow grease and many varied skills (like setting up internet, telephones, electrical, engineering, contracting and so on and so on).   From all of us at PA, a huge thanks to all of them. Also huge thanks to Flore Gunn who had us up and operational within 8 days of moving in! That is some kind of record folks and a big credit to Flore’s leadership during this complicated move.

As this article is being written the new SeaRey amphibious ramp is being installed to the lake that will allow SeaRey flight operations directly from the water and allow opening of the builder assist center on June 1.

All in all it was a labor of love by many people in support of our beloved SeaRey and our heartfelt thanks goes out to all of them. In return we will work very hard to continue to make this the safest and most fun seaplane in the world.

SeaRey Kit Number 500 Shipped!

We were so busy this monumental milestone slipped right by us folks, but in January of 2010 the 500th SeaRey kit was shipped to a happy customer in Brussels Belgium.   Some say that that is the best feature of all about the SeaRey… that so many SeaReys have been flying, for so long and in so many varied conditions.

Some facts … Progressive Aerodyne is the designer of the SeaRey and has been in business for over 20 years.  The SeaRey has been shipping for 18 years and we estimate there are over some 400 SeaReys flying worldwide in all kinds of conditions.    There are SeaReys flying from the beachs of Florida to the Rocky Mountain lakes in the searing cold of Canada to the salty heat of Australia.   Over many years and tens of thousands of flying hours the SeaRey has been tempered by real world experience to become the tough little bird it is today!

Hangar and Builder Space Available at the New Headquarters

PA is offering hangar space for SeaRey aircraft and SeaRey amateur builders  right at the new facility in Tavares.   A very gradual ramp from the hangar direct to the shoreline of lake Idamere is being built now and will be complete by June 15th.   If interested, call 407-902-9164 for details.
